Troopers responded to the blaze around 8:45 p.m. at 543 Warm Spring Road in Franklin County, where first responders found the 72-year-old deceased inside the home, according to a release from Trooper Megan Frazer on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Masgalas, who owned and operated 30 West Family Restaurant in Chambersburg for 35 years, was remembered as a cornerstone of the community. "She touched many lives throughout her career with her kind heart, whether it be employees or customers," the restaurant shared in a statement to CBS21.
Born in Kefalovrison, Aitoliko, Greece, Masgalas built a life dedicated to her family, her business, and her community, according to her obituary posted by Geisel Funeral Home. Her six grandsons were described as "her world," and she was known for her love of cooking, playing slot machines, and welcoming everyone with warmth.
The Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg are investigating the fire, and the Franklin County Coroner’s Office has also been involved.
Tributes have poured in from the community, with over 400 comments on social media mourning her loss. "Crystal was more than a small business owner; she was a mom, grandma, and a great person," one commenter shared. Another remembered her as "a truly caring and sweet lady, always with a smile and a hug."
Masgalas is survived by her two sons, John (wife Sheena) and George (wife Kasey) Masgalas, and her grandchildren, Charlie, Athan, Carson, Maysen, Christian, and Elias.
